Didn't we just answer this yesterday?
When the ball is not hit directly to the catcher's glove.

To be more accurate, -- When the ball is not hit directly to the catchers glove or his body. Remember a ball that goes directly from the bat to the catcher and rebounds off his body is not a foul tip nor can it be caught on the fly for an out.

A FOUL TIP is a batted ball that goes sharp and direct from the bat to the catcher's hands and is legally caught. It is not a foul tip unless caught and any foul tip that is caught is a strike, and the ball is in play. It is not a catch if it is a rebound, unless the ball has first touched the catcher's glove or hand.

Ummm, when he catches it perhaps. You can find the definition of a catch in Rule 2.0. You may also want to look up the definition of a foul tip, as there is a difference.

As long as the ball does not go sharp and direct to the glove or body, and you judge the ball gained height, you can have a catch for an out.
I just had one Sat where batter squared to bunt, pitch comes inside, ball hits bat and gains height and arc, catcher catches for an out. The ball barely went higher than the catchers shoulder. |

At no point. A foul ball is a dead ball, and cannot be caught for an out.
