MLB 3B umpires

I've seen a number of MLB 3B umpires straddle the line at times. What is the rationale for straddling sometimes and not always or never? The only plausible guess I could muster was fail/foul calls with a runner on 3B in order to help the PU.

Thanks for you insights!
