MLB 3B umpires
I've seen a number of MLB 3B umpires straddle the line at times. What is the rationale for straddling sometimes and not always or never? The only plausible guess I could muster was fail/foul calls with a runner on 3B in order to help the PU.
Thanks for you insights! |

Even when using 3-man mechanics, I'll do it with R3 and a left-handed batter up -- so as not to have my view of a possible check swing blocked by the runner.

Just a comfort thing.. As with any new (or perceived new) mechanic, try it out and see if it makes you more comfortable in your own position and view. As stated in another post, I too heard it was a result of getting a better look at check swings with a runner on third.....
