Does the Run Score?
Situation: R2, R3 with 1 out. High fly ball to F4, both runners are running with no attempt to go back towards their bases. F4 makes catch and R3 crosses home plate and is walking to the dugout when F4 touches second for the third out.
Two questions: 1) I assume the run counts because nobody appealed the runner at third. 2) Do we have an obligation to tell the official scorer that the run scores? If so, when do we tell them so as not to alert the defense to appeal. |

2) Treat it as any other timing play. If it's "close", tell the scorer. If it's "obvious" no need to say anything. |

Bob, I'm assuming you would wait for the defense to leave the field before talking with scorer.
I wasn't working last night's game when this happened but both teams assumed the run didn't count so it was never recorded as such. I assuming that the defense could have gotten a fourth out in this situation to nullify the run. |

And, to add to this. The defense can still appeal R3 leaving early for the advantageous 4th out. Then, the run won't score.

If the scorekeeper is some Mom or Dad, I'd definitely tell them the run scores AFTER there's no chance for appeal (defense has left the field). Moms and Dads are going to make assumptions (likely the one that helps their team) - and probably think of the appeal as a "force play".
If you have an official SK, what Bob said works.

I'd use the same mechanics I'd use on any other timing play. Point to the plate and say "that run scores" as soon as there's no further play going on.

Agree. You need to make a call on the time play when it happens, whether or not it is subject to an appeal.
