Is your unit going to allow this jacket?

Two guys wore this and the navy version to the first meeting, and the unit VP said it was approved for 2009.

Approved for use by SCCUA, CCAA and Big West out here on West Coast. My HS association doesn't care what we wear as long as we match. Last year for fun my partner and I went total old school with button up light blue shirts and black polyester pants for one game. Followed it a week later with Hawaiian shirts.

Yes, it was approved last year here, if all your partners had it.

First, let's keep my unit out of it.

Secondly, doesn't it remind you of a Member's Only jacket? Was it Starsky or Hutch I last saw wearing this tunic? Plus, horizontal stripes on some of our more, um, larger fellows isn't flattering.

The MLB version also comes with a polo stripe.

Not even the GT racing stripe saves this from being a smock.

Don't you think the black pants and Hawaiian shirts are a bit much? They are really untraditional or outdated.

Ah, who told you this? Not that I am interested in wearing it, but has that come down from somebody in the Office?

It would look all right if you kept the sleeves on, but the version that has the stripes over the shoulders looks best to me.

As for a "throwback" game, I've thought about digging out my old Elbeco shirt more than once, but I need navy or black pants.

I've done retro night at the park. Elbecos, little bow ties and the pillow.

Still couldn't do the beanie because of the Jimmy Dugan reference.

tip184, the point being that as long as you and your partner match AND are professional, what does it matter? That's why the Pro's have so much leniency in what they wear. If we continue to accept ONLY black, or polo blue as our standard, doesn't that create a monopoly? Honigs is the ONLY supplier for many D1 conferences. That is a monopoly. Yes, we were a bit overboard on the throwback, but the point being, we matched, and gave the game our all. Just having the "accepted" uniform does not make an umpire. I even broke out the balloon protector last year on a JC game. The HC's (whom I had worked many games before) actually appreciated me doing something different. Dare to be different. If you want conformity, do womens softball.

First time I saw it in the short sleeve, I thought, a little to garish even for taking batting practice.

No, but having a sense of humor about it is really up to date!

Oh, and there are associations out there that use the black pants still! Some manufacturers still carry plate pants in black.
