Little League Umpiring Help - Please
I have been charged with the task of scheduling and overseeing the umpires for our Little League this year. I am taking this summer off from High School officiating to watch my son and daughter play more and thought it would be a good idea to stay involved, since i will be there. Anyway, the kids that umpire range from 11yrs old to College kids, many different levels of little league. We currently have 3 levels of pay scale and I am looking for different levels of baseball tests to administor. Can anyone suggest a site, or have such things, other than myself going through the Little League rules and making up my own questions? Thanks in advance....T

Get ready for the brickbats
A friendly warning: You will get some people on this board who fervently mock anything to do with Little League.
If you message me with your email address, I will try to get you some stuff I have compiled over the years. Ace Holleran

Understandable
But.....to hell with them!!!!
Everyone on this board should be open to the fact that 'Big League' Umpires have got to start somewhere....and if I can get kids excited about umpiring at a young age, and teach them the rights and wrongs, then it is only making the game that much better....for everyone. Ask any Athletic Director or scheduler, the pool to draw from is shrinking because younger kids are not getting into officiating.... Am sending you off an email!!! Thanks. T

Side Note: You said you want to see your kids play, but being a scheduler / assignor of umpires and also overseeing the umpires in an LL Organization can be very time consuming so I do not know how much time you will have to actually see your kids play. http://www.eteamz.com/baseball/boards/index.cfm?

have them certify as babe ruth umpires...if those are the rules you're using. don't you want all of your umpires to know the rules? everybody takes the same test... you should all know the rules. rate pay on experience and mechanics

We are under Little League jurisdiction - kind of...
The lower level of umpires are just doing tee ball and coaches pitch. No score is kept, kids bat every inning, that sort of thing...they are there to count pitches, and never put any gear on.... The rest of the levels will be graded and slotted accordingly based on performance....and given the same test.... thanks for the input...

It does seem to add to the kids excitement level when a uniformed umpire shows up to "call" one of their games. They're really not needed as administrators of the rules. The coaches could do that just fine. It's the underlying message that makes the kids feel like they're playing "real" baseball, just like they see on TV, that drives the need to have young umpires work their games. Tim. |

I'd rate pay by the position on the field, for little peoples games. Majors/minors, plate/base. |

I can certainly see the attraction, but as almost every assignor bemoans the shortage of umpires it seems a waste of scarce resources to me. JMO. |
