Interested Ump: If you rotted out a pair of PU pants, then you definitely were not taking good care of your pants and were wearing a pair that should have been replaced a long time before they split on you. Sorry, but you lose on this one. MTD, Sr.

If your plate pants were rotting out because they were salty and sweaty that means you weren't washing your plate pants on a regular basis, meaning you were not maintaining your equipment properly. That means if you were umpiring with me and were wearing a pair of salty, sweaty, rotted out pair of plate pants I would make sure that I would be standing up wind from you at all times. There no excuse for not keeping your gear in good repair. Sorry you still don't have a winner. MTD, Sr.

Let's return to reality, shall we? The reality is that amateur baseball is called by a very large number of umpires who don't meet your exacting criteria for pants excellence. Or shirt excellence. Or jock strap excellence for as best as I can tell. These DeNucci imperfects allow our children to play baseball. Without them, how many thousands of games, and kids, would never be played or play? My children included. Go right ahead, make fun of my lack of money and my split pants if it pleases you. Make fun of those umpires less fortunate who aren't DeNucci-labeled and aren't worthy of a look down your turned up nose. It's the Old Guard standard. A self-righteous ball of hypocrisy as if you were Kings and Princes of an elite, executive society. We are officials, in service to the game and its participants, nothing more, nothing less no matter how you want to overvalue your $15 per hour status.

Interested Ump: On Mar. 11, 2008 at 01:50amEST you stated and I quote: "Yes, Steven, it has. I rottted out a pair of PU pants from salty sweat, slowly let loose the threading. Standing upright, there was nothing to report. Squatting was another matter." You admitted to wearing a pair of pants that rotted out from salt and sweat. That can only mean one thing: You do not bother to wash your umpiring pants. One does not have to spend a fortune to look professional. It does not take a lot of money to properlay maintain your officiating equipment. Wash your pants regularily and they will not rot out from salt and sweat. And if you want to get back to reality, your tirade is absolute nonsense. MTD, Sr.

Guys,
Let's bring a little levity to this discussion. Yeah, the picture is funny, maybe tacky to some, but let's not pass judgment on the guy. Maybe his pants split that day. So what. Congrats to SanDiegoSteve on his accomplishments. I happen to have a BS in Chemical Engineering, an MBA and a Masters in Project Management and I make good money. So what. The only things that are important to me - I have a roof over my head, clothes on my back that aren't setting any fashion trends, food on my table, a wife and son whom I love dearly and who love me. I coach my son's team, I umpire various levels of baseball because I enjoy it, and I'm treasurer for the local baseball association, also because I enjoy it. Overall, I'd say I'm pretty lucky, considering I could be six feet under like the best man at my wedding, a lifelong friend of 42 years, who dropped dead of a massive heart attack three months ago at the ripe old age of 51. Your perspective has a tendency to change. So here I sit reading the unnecessary mud slinging in this thread and wonder - what purpose does it serve to be so judgmental? Is this vanity run wild, or just a need for some to make fun at the expense of others? I'm certainly far from perfect and have plenty of flaws as my wife likes to point out once in a while. Maybe we all need to take stock of ourselves to realize there's more out of life than trying to take advantage of someone's misfortune, whatever that is. |

Big Guy, thanks for the congratulations.
I do believe the purpose of this thread was to provide levity. All the excess mud slinging is just a bi-product of the original frivolity. This guy's picture is on the internet, so it's pretty much fair game for Tyler to make fun of him. I've had a pair of pants rip in the a$$ end for me in the early days of umpiring, long before readily available specialized plate pants were in vogue (I had gray longjohns underneath). But I've never worn a mask without a hat or umpired without shin guards, which was my point that even without the ripped trousers, there were plenty of other things to critique with this guy.
