bossman,
I like - crisp, short, not overly dramatic. Being new to this, I'm still prone to a bit of scenery chewing, so anything to tone done (where appropriate) can only improve my games. Thank you.

STRIKE !
It used to be HIKE when I wore a mask (couldn't get the STR out), but then I switched to a helmet, and magically, I could pronounce S's again ! (no pressure on your chin)

GarthB -
In point of fact, I can and do say "STRIKE" quite intelligibly with a conventional mask on. [thread hijack] I was watching the local broadcast of the Orioles' oh-so-sweet (for its rarity) pasting of the Yankees yesterday. Late in the game, C.B. Bucknor took a foul squarely in the face of his HSM, a blow which dropped him to his knees. Color man Buck Martinez gave a fairly lengthy dissertation on why - for that type of blow - the conventional mask distributes the impact better than the HSM. I will not comment further on Mr. Martinez's appreciation of either human skeletal anatomy, or physics. I am happy to report, Mr. Bucknor was fine and completed the game with no ill effects evident. Despit Nick's problems with s's, the jaw doesn't drop when pronouncing the s sound in strike...it drops to facilitate the "r" and "i" sounds. Loosen your straps before lockjaw sets in.

One day, I took a wicked foul ball square to the middle of the mask, and I was seeing stars! There I am, behind the dish, down on 1 knee, and my partner (a veteran) comes to check on me. "You okay?", says he. "I dunno.", says I. "Loosen you @*%#ing straps!", says he. I wish I saw this thread before getting hit by that one, I'm sure it would've helped. Amazing. A $90 mask protects you properly only when worn properly. |
