Longest: This year, 21 innings in an NJCAA Regional game. Time: 4:31. And yes, I was doing the plate. It was my second game of the day. The next day, in my second game of the day, I had the plate again in a 9-inning game that lasted 3:35! Figure that out. Oh, and the worst thing? The day after that, I had to take the spot of one of our young umpires in an emergency fill-in for THREE Little League games in a row. I don't do L.L. anymore, but got stuck with 18 more innings of plate work. All total, I had 48 innings of plate work in less than 48 hours! Needless to say, my feet had to be euthanized after that, though I DID switch to my comfortable base shoes for the second two LL games.
Quickest 9-inning: Today, 9 full innings (9-inning tournament games) in 1:37. Score = 2-1. Home team WAS winning 1-0 until the 7th, when the visitors scored thanks to an error. We WERE on track for an hour twenty. Quickest game ever: in 1984, a Little League game, 47 minutes, where the visiting pitcher struck out all 18 batters he faced, 13 of them looking. Moreover, only two balls were ever contacted, one a foul off to the left side, the other a foul off to the right. No one ever touched the ball again on the home team. Adult amateur baseball 9 innings 1:28 mins...score was 7 - 1...all of the runs were scored in the bottom of the 1st...then the losing team got one garbage run in the 8th...no walks, and players were swinging.
One of my colleagues worked a 28 inning 1 - 0 game 5 hrs 50 minutes...one of the longest games in MN baseball history.

Longest game
I had a 17-inning game a few years ago that started at 7pm. We walked off the field at 1:40am - 6 hr, 40 min. And it was a great game - both teams scored in 3 of the extra innings - final score 7-6, home team winning (later won state championship that year).
Oh by the way - this was the Varsity game of a JV/V DH!!!! We started at 4:30 that afternoon. Total time 9hrs, 10 min.

Not the quickest
Not the quickest but still humorous...
From my minor league days: Had a July 4th game scheduled for 7:05. Fireworks are scheduled for after the game. This particular year, Independence Day fell during the middle of the week. GM calls us at the hotel and says they want to move the game time up to 6:00. He says that with the holiday being in the middle of the week, they think they'll get a bigger crowd if they start at 6 with the fireworks starting at around 9 or 9:30 instead of 10 or 10:30. We say no problem. I was on the plate. We played a full nine innings in 1:43. It was only 7:43 when the game was over. This team was in the northeast and that far north and that early in the summer, they had to wait an hour and fifteen minutes for it to get dark enough to light the fireworks. After the game Bob Stanley (former Red Sox relief pitcher) who was the pitching coach for the home team said to me, "If you were around ten years ago, I'd still be in the majors!" GM says, "damn if we knew you guys would be done that fast, we would have left the start time at 7." (As an aside...I heard NOTHING about my strike zone from anyone. Just had a lot of good pitching and a lot of batters swinging.) |

Just after I get through posting that my game two days ago was a 9-inning regular game that lasted only 1:37, Bob J. and I worked a CICL playoff game last night that went 13 innings and 3:43. Well, at least it wasn't MY plate job last night.
At least Bob made it interesting. He tossed the visiting team's manager for arguing balls and strikes in a less than complimentary manner. |

Hey all,
SHORTEST: LL: 1:25 10-11YO District championship game (complete game 1-0) Men's adult league: 1:40 LONGEST: LL: multiple 3hr+ (sometimes they just can' hit the strike zone!) Men's adult league: 5 innings 31-8, 3:30, home team lost, didn''t make it to the 10 run rule after 7 innings. Home team decided to call the game because the game time for the second game was only 30 minutes away. LomUmp |
