Stepping out of the box doesn't make it an automatic out. The batter has to have at least one foot on the ground completely out of the box and make contact with the ball. The lines are considered part of the box, so in OBR at least, a batter could conceivably have part of his foot on the plate and still be in the box. Here's the rule.
6.06(a) A batter is out for illegal action when he hits a ball with one or both feet on the ground entirely outside the batter’s box. Tim. |
