Helmets in the men's game are primarily for stick-to-head contact which is NOT taught in the women's game. As for the ball, the head is generally not in play.
A parallel is in hockey - back in the good old days before masks on hockey helmets you rarely saw a stick to the head. But now that the kids from their first pair of skates are wearing helmets and masks you see the sticks getting up all the time. p.s. - we're not COMPLAING we can see the women players' faces are we?
