Lacrosse question?--Off topic

Since no one goes to the Lacrosse board and I think my question will not go answered I have a question for those that either work Lacrosse or experience the sport as a fan with their kids or go to games.

Why does Girl's Lacrosse the girls wear only eye shields and the Boy's wear helmets?

JRutledge,

While I would not consider myself well-informed on the subject, I understand that girls' Lacrosse is a "non-contact" sport, at least in the same sense as say, field hockey or softball is.

However, the solid rubber ball and the sticks are just as hard in women's Lacrosse as they are in men's Lacrosse.

The lack of a helmet in the women's games makes no (apparent) sense.

Helmets in the men's game are primarily for stick-to-head contact which is NOT taught in the women's game. As for the ball, the head is generally not in play.
A parallel is in hockey - back in the good old days before masks on hockey helmets you rarely saw a stick to the head. But now that the kids from their first pair of skates are wearing helmets and masks you see the sticks getting up all the time.
p.s. - we're not COMPLAING we can see the women players' faces are we?

Yeah, but do we really want too?

SanDiegoSteve Sat May 27, 2006 12:06pm

Yeah, that Wake Forest player looks like she's been hit in the face with more than just a stick or two!

NFump Sat May 27, 2006 12:08pm

Must be like looking in a mirror for ya huh?

My bad, I couldn't resist. I wasn't gonna post it but I already hit the post button.

Um, you have to imagine without the huge boxer-type mouthpieces gentlemen.

NFump Sat May 27, 2006 12:23pm

You're right! I'd do her!

From my limited knowledge of the sport, the women are not wearing any upper body protection either, as do the men.

Interesting comment NFump  (as women read this forum also) but notice that in the picture the women are using bigger "sticks" than many of us own--------unless of course we play Lacrosse :D

girls used to not wear any eye/head protection at least at the college level. those eye things are only within the last two years i believe, as i know my first year or two of college the girls didnt have anything but the guys always had helmets.

that said, i hate lacrosse.

I watched the NCAA semis in lacrosse today, and it was the first time I ever sat and actually watched an entire game. I found it to be exciting and fast-paced. I enjoyed it. I like it much better than outdoor soccer, which is only exciting when a goal is scored.

Wake Forest?

They also don't wear shoulder pads. Girl's lacrosse is supposedly a 'no contact' sport in Illinois.

Why do girls wear shorts when they play high school and NCAA softball? They still dive and slide and without the protection, look like hell after the season.
