Catch or no catch(foul ball)?

Ok, here is the situation......batter swings and fouls the ball directly back to catcher at which time the catcher does not catch it but the ball deflects off his mask and goes straight up in the air.....catcher then catches the ball......is this a catch or no catch? Is he out? foul ball?

Does a foul ball have to be above the batters head in order to be ruled a catch/out?

Thanks for your insight......I know this is probably basic stuff...but it seemed weird at the time.

1) Foul ball.

2) There is no height requirement for a foul ball or fly ball.

3) A foul tip must go sharp and direct to the catcher's glove.

If the ball first hit the glove, then deflec.ted off the mask and was caught, it's a foul tip. If the ball first hit the maks (or anything other than the glove) it's a foul ball.
