I was the base umpire in a Junior Little League game(13 & 14 year olds). The situation is this: there are two outs, r1 on 3rd base, the count on the batter is three and two. The stupid coach, has the r1 steal home. Thank goodness that the pitch was so high that the batter didn't swing. Can you imagine what the consequences could have been if that batter had swung? I kind of lost it and advised the coach that if that was my kid, he wouldn't be playing for him again! I was just amazed.

Yer right, Phil.
Maybe the batter missed the bunt sign.
Did the Coach have a defense for that idiotic play?

I can see us wondering about some things that happen in the games situationally. However, it is not our job to question it or make issues with it.

You let your feelings get in the way and acted on them. Remember, if you are officially adjudging the game, stay out of the dugout.

Phil,

The coach is probably posting somewhere about stupid umpires....lol...

I can really sympathize with how you feel, but it's not our place to comment on the stupidity of their play. We're umpires, not commentators.

That being said, since this isn't Varsity or College, maybe you've got enough rep to do this in the following inning:

"Coach, that seemed dangerous, batter miss the bunt sign?"

Good luck Phil, call the game man, don't commentate on it.

Will

How do you know the coach had anything at all to do with the steal of home? Could have been that R3 did it on his own.

I think I would have mentioned it to the coach between innings, like, Gee coach that batter missed your steal signal, lucky R3 didn't get killed, or something of that nature. At least by doing that, you have made the coach aware of a dangerous situation and could stop it from happening again. G.

Phil I know as umpires we are not supposed to say anything concerning the coaching aspect of the game.

However, on a more human note , I will tell the batter - hey r3 is coming home - don't swing.

Now If the pitch is strike 3 or anywhere near hitable, I know I can get in hot water, but I'd rather be in hot water than have some kids lights knocked out . If the batter takes his normal cut and hits r3 anywhere near the head area, chances are that something fatal will happen.

Since you said LL, it would be interesting to see if seeing r3 break for home we immediately called time, sent r3 back to third and declared the pitch a no pitch, stretching 9.01c to the hilt.

Pete,
It's Little League, but it's Juniors, so the lead off is okay.
