It's called a "Braille" indicator because it is notched, so you can "read" it by touch instead of having to look at it.

Good umpires don't have to look at their indicators that often anyway. Hell, I can reset mine without even looking at it.

I love the rookies who stare at their indicators so much that they think they'd die without doing this.
