Now - Garth, the very individual who has treated you rather tersely for not knowing this rule, derided ME for employing this coaching tactic - saying that I was embarrassing the umpire. He did not leave room for the fact that the umpire embarrassed himself for being completely ignorant of the rule ... the very thing he is accusing YOU of.

See the pattern? [g]

Learn to read Emerling. The only thing I accused him of was not taking the time to read the rule book, a problem shared by many coaches. If you are going to credit me in your posts, get it right, DF.

Characterize your exchange with this gentleman as you wish. The tone was clear. I wasn't the only one who detected the clearly caustic tone of your replies.

You just wanted him to read the rule book, huh? As if all the answers are in there. As if non-umpires would have immediate recognition and understanding of the Official Baseball Rules. As if pitcher regulations are not complicated enough.

Excuse me if I'm not completely convinced that the extent of your exchange was only intended to encourage this coach to reference a rule book.

This sort of reminds me of something President George W. Bush once said with regards to terrorists, "We are not deceived by their pretense to piety. We have seen their kinds before."

I was reminded of a Bush quote too, but a different one:

"Our enemies are innovative and resourceful, and so are we. They never stop thinking about new ways to harm our country and our people, and neither do we."
