New Rule?
I was scimming the 2016 MLBUM and saw that a change was made:
If the B/R misses first on a play but beats the throw the umpire is not supposed to call him safe anymore. He is supposed to make no call at all and wait for an appeal. Am I reading this correctly? Also--I was reading the 2017 NFHS Baseball Casebook and they say an out should not be called if a runner/batter removes his helmet when the ball is live. Issue a warning and if it happens again eject. Is this something new or has it always been so? |

It says that even if the umpire is now tipping off the defense that an appeal is to be made this is how they want it to be.
When I get b ack home I will post the new interpretation verbatim. |

Re: removing a helmet, never has been an out, in any reputable code, so they must be squelching a persistent rule myth that keeps coming up. |

Something like that. I am working a midnight shift so I will quote the rule verbatim later on in the afternoon |

That is what we do when a runner misses the plate and eludes the tag so I suppose they wanted the same mechanic for 1B as well. Last edited by MT 73; Sun Apr 02, 2017 at 11:38am. |
