"we could argue these things indefinitely. So we have case books and PBUC and BRD and J/R and calls to MLB umpires."
You forgot the internet, which definitly gives credibility to the fact that," we could argue these things indefinitely". Which for the most part , is definitly a positive. |

I agree 100%, jicecone. The net is invaluable. In the two years that I have been participating on this board, I have learned an enormous amount in both baseball and softball. All the case books and clinics in the world could not have imparted as much information.
I also enjoy communicating with umpires who care about calling plays correctly and want to learn as much as possible. Surprisingly, most of the umps I know are not really interested.

Warren Willson and Greymule,
THANK YOU to both of you gentlemen. Together, your replies are clear, responsive and educational. I understand the principle, feel comforable with using it on the diamond, and I will be alert for the occassion. I have printed this thread and will keep it in my equipment bag, not as a page from the "bible", but as excellent instruction on how to handle a rather difficult play.

Your reply is one reason I continue to post on discussion boards such as this: not for the thanks but rather for the knowledge that someone has benefited from my sharing my experience. Another reason is to learn for myself, and that is still going on even in the twilight of my officiating career. I'm sure that greymule feels the same way. I know I share his enjoyment of discussing the game we all love with our more sincere fellow officials. Cheers
