Free throws with 4th quarter time expired
NFHS, Ohio. Team A down by 2, with the ball and fouled while shooting a short jump shot. Whistle for the foul did beat the buzzer by a fraction of a second but the buzzer sounded and the clock displayed all "0's". Shooter from Team A went to the line with the lane cleared. Made the first. Team B called timeout. Team A missed the second.
If the Team A free throw shooter would have missed the first of two, would you shoot the second? I have looked through the 2019/20 case book and didn't see this addressed. I have asked fellow officials and received a variety of answers from "No you wouldn't shoot it" to "I would ask Team A coach if he wanted to shoot it" to "Yes, you have to shoot it". |

From NFHS rule 5-6-2 exception #3: ”...No free throw(s) must be attempted after time has expired for the fourth quarter or any extra period, unless the point(s) would affect the outcome of the game.“
And the accompanying case book ruling 5.6.2 SITUATION E: ”A1 has been awarded two free throws after time has expired in the fourth quarter. Team B leads 62 to 60 and A1 misses the first free throw. RULING: The second free throw will not be attempted. (5-6-2 EXCEPTION 3)” |

I believe that NCAA only recently made that change. The two levels were aligned on this for many years.

Other than the possibility of influence from Las Vegas, why in the world would there be any impetus to change this rule and allow meaningless free throws? Especially when this scenario is already so rare in games with monitors*, where only a foul on an airborne shooter post-release after time has expired would ever result in personal foul FTs with the lane cleared. Seems like a needless rule change to me. The NFL finally did away with meaningless conversions a couple of years ago, yet NCAAB goes the opposite direction? Weird. * Yes, I know the majority of NCAA games don’t have monitors. But those games don’t get the visibility that drives rules changes, and they typically aren’t wagered on, either! Id wager it would be to prevent stupid crap from happening that would lead to someone's vacation. I've had to give some slight rants to partners here lately about not getting off the floor after games. We narrowly avoided a situation last week that I wouldn't if had to head about if they would of left the game ball alone after the game was over. |
