Why don't we all just use the "No Shot' signal?
I guess the "On The Floor' signal" is a good example of using a non-standard signal.
I was watching a game last Sunday: the official called a foul, immediately gave the "no basket" signal and after that he did the "on the floor" one, just when the ball was going through the basket. I was confused for some seconds, because it was just like "basket is good" You can imagine how fans might react in this case.

Some years ago I saw an official who thought that the "wave off" signal was to be used as "stop the clock": when calling a foul on the shooter he waved off and then signalled that the basket was good. Really.
