Based on how the question was presented you would be turning a blind eye to the substitution rule.

And that is the correct thing to do. As I referenced in another thread and find myself repeating quite often the rules book instructs us to "know the intent and purpose of a rule so that it may be applied intelligently in each play situation."

Here it is obvious that the coach is appropriately handling addressing his player's behavior and not trying to gain an advantage not intended by rule. If the opposing coach questions it then you can easily explain the situation and how you would do the same thing for him.

Anyone insistent on going by the letter of the law here is likely not someone I'd want to work games with.
