Here's one I hadn't seen before

Last night, HS JV game. I'm R1.

Team A player goes back to serve.

I whistle and beckon for service...Server clearly foot faults on her serve, so I blow my whistle. I also hear my partners whistle. I look over at her and she is signalling an illegal alignment on the receiving team. Okay, what do we do now?

We replayed it as both violations happened simultaneously.

This is a point / loss of rally to the receiving team. This should be covered by the NFHS rules concerning the serve (rule 8?). I do not have my book with me, so I am unable to give you an exact rule reference.

You handled it incorrectly.

See Casebook 8.2.6 Situation.

In short, you can't have an illegal alignment unless the ball is contacted legally for service. Therefore, there was no illegal alignment, by rule, on the receiving team, and they should have received the point.

Felix is right (and in other news, the sun rose in the east yet again today).

NFHS 8-2-7: When a receiving team player is out of position on the serve and:
a. The ball is served illegally, the serving team is penalized;
b. A service fault occurs, the receiving team is penalized.

NFHS 8-2-5, 6 define the illegal serve and the service fault. The OP is an illegal serve.

Thanks to you all....

We had a brief discussion at the time it happened..couldn't remember anything specific about this situation..so we replayed it.

Guess I will know better next time!

You'll own that if it ever happens again!

The wording here would confuse me at a glance.

Typically my understanding is that R1 is in full authority from serve beckon and then to determine if ball is served withing time limit and without foot fault. Once ball is legally contacted, then any out of position at the time of ball contact can be assessed by R2.

So that leaves me with one question here.

What if the serving team is out of position, but with correct server. Receiving team is also out of position or overlapped player(s). Who would get penalized? Or is it replay?

Double fault. Legal contact of serve, both teams overlapped. Replay.
