Raised basketball backboards

NFHS rules:

I haven't gotten my new rulebook yet, but I just attended a meeting at which we were told that raised basketball backboards are no longer considered to be the ceiling. The 15-foot verbiage was removed from the book.

So now (we were told) a ball that hits a raised backboard can result in a replay. Is this correct? If so, could you provide a citation for the rule change? Thanks for any help.

The NFHS did not change any rules related to basketball backboards this year. Maybe it's a rule only in your state.

Thanks, Bob. I didn't think so. This guy has forgotten more about volleyball than I'll ever know, but sometimes he sees things in the rules that just aren't there.

There was a change in how side-raised vertical backboards were treated a few years ago. Maybe that's the confusion.

Maybe so. How are they treated now?

I am traveling without my books but: They used to be treated as vertical backboards -- referee discretion to call out or replay. Now, they are ceiling--play on if the team has a hit remaining.

Raised Backboard

A ball striking the ceiling or an overhard obstruction above a playable area shall remain in play providing the ball contacts the ceiling or obstruction on the side of the net extended that is occupied by the team that last played the ball, and the ball is legally played next by the same team (NFHS 2-2)
