2014 NFHS Softball Rules Interpretations.

I was reviewing the NFHS Softball Rules Interpretations published by the NFHS in February 2014, and Situation 6 did not grab my attention until I re-read it again earlier today.

SITUATION 6: A parent sits in the stands and videotapes the play of the opposing pitcher with the intent of giving it to the coach. RULING: Illegal. The parent may videotape his/her team and give that video to the coach for the purpose of coaching the team. (R1-S8-A6 and R3-S6-A11)

What is wrong with the RULING?

The first thing I can say, is how are we supposed to enforce the ruling? If we see a fan using an I-pad or video camera how are we going to know what they are recording.

Second, if this is happening during live ball play, it is very possible that the recording is of the batters who are batting against this pitcher.

Finally, I can see where the NFHS is coming from. They are saying that the video is not for use in coaching their team, which is required under rule 3-6-11.

Personally I think, and I think you are getting at, video taping the opposing pitcher is done in an effort to coach your team, therefore having video of an opposing pitcher to show your players is coaching your team, which is legal 3-6-11.

Again, unless there is something extreme, such as the parent coming down and telling the umpire that they are recording the other teams pitcher so the coach can look for something in her pitch, there is nothing I can or will do.

Finally, 1-8-6 references team personnel, of which a parent is generally not, so they are not subject to the rule on videotaping.

I have a feeling that this was a quick, and incomplete, edit due to the change in NFHS stance on recording devices.

Basically unenforceable without a confession.

The parent CAN videotape their OWN team and give that tape to the coach, but the parent CANNOT videotape the OTHER team with the INTENT of giving that tape to the coach.

Really? Seriously? You're kidding, right?
