Ok here is the situation R1 on first BU in B position, ball gets by catcher and R1 rounds 2nd and heads to 3rd. My question is who has the call at 3rd. I know it depends on a lot of things but what I like to do is #1 talk about this in pregame but as PU I like to get down the line and take the call at third while yelling to my partner "I got 3." But I saw a crew last night where IMO PU was lazy and did not move from behind plate and BU was busting her butt to get there and was in poor position to make the call. She made IMO the right call but it was hard and if the play was closer looked like she would have a difficult time getting a good angle. So I quess I am just asking what do you all do on this type of play? And if you have BU take the call do you cut inside the diamond to save steps or do you still run outside of second makeing you farther behind the play?

The situation that you spelled out is precisely the reason that I prefer the PU take the call at third.

When I am on the plate and this happens, I will start taking a few steps toward third while watching the play at second. This way I am already moving toward a possible play at third.

The extension of this is that the BU needs to be ready to rotate to cover home if there is an overthrow at third. It is something that you should definitley cover in pregame.

Unless the passed ball traps the umpire on the 1B side of home, the PU has the call at 3B.

If BU must make call, they should hustle to a point around 9 o'clock to get an angle and avoid making the call from behind the play.

In a play with the ball getting past the catcher I'd be concerned that PU might not be able to get into position, dodging the ball, the catcher, and the catcher's throw. PU may have a better chance to get into position and should head that way until called off by PU.

Good ol' ASA mechanics! They won't ever fail you!
