18 & Under, 3 person crew, early in game. Runners on the corners, no outs. Runner starts to second legally and slows down when catcher fails to throw and is really wanting to draw a throw to second to get caught in a "pickle" to give the runner at third a chance to go home and score. Question: does the umpire at third bail from the line position once the ball has been thrown to second and come over to help on the run down that is created between first and second or let the first base umpire maintian the run down/pickle by him/her self? That would leave the plate to try and run a possible problem between third and home by his/her self. Would'nt a lead runner possibly scoring take the more important coverage?

I wouldn't have the umpire "bail" off their assignment, but I think U3 would need to start in that direction as an extra set of eyes on the 2B end. However, U3 must also stay outside and be prepared for a throw to 3B. U1 can come to a holding position on the 3B side in foul ground to lend a hand, but is going to need to be prepared to commit to the plate should the runner even simulate a break in that direction. This is where 3B seems relatively bare if R1 has to beat a throw back to 3B. U3 must be prepared to cover that play.

A lot depends on the crew, their experience and ability to work with each other.
