here's a weird one from a fast pitch debate today - batter swings and fouls the ball back - ball goes up at angle and hits one of the metal support posts of the BACKSTOP - ball bounces back, hits ground just inside 1st base foul line - ball continues to roll and ends up stopping just inside the the 1st base line on fair ground fair or foul ??? i know the backstop is considered to be part of the ground, but is it ok to bounce off it and end up with a fair ball?? (i called it foul)

so, as soon as a foul ball hits the backstop it is foul?
that's what i called ... where is this buried in the rule books ??? the argument came about because the ball bounced back and settled on fair ground

Check Fed. Rule 2-25-1-d: A fould ball is a batted ball which: while on or over foul territory, touches the person of an umpire, a player or any object foreign to the natural ground. Last time I checked the backstop was not part of the natural ground.

In ASA, it is in Rule 1-DEFINITIONS-FOUL BALL-C. Wording is almost exactly the same as Fed.
If you are a new umpire, spend some quality time in the Defintions section of the rule book. The Definitions are, IMO, the most valuable section of the book to know with as close as you can get to total recall, yet it is a section that is many times scanned or skipped over.
