NFHS test #82

I need a little help here.

Question #82

Which of the following is true regarding knee and ankle braces that are unaltered from the manufacturer's original design/production?

a. They do not require any additional padding/covering.
b. They must be covered with athletic tape.
c. They must be padded with 1/2 inch thick foam.
d. They are permitted with a doctor's note.
e. All of the above.

The instructions there can only be one answer, but I have two. a and c. There is no statement that they must be covered with athletic tape so b is incorrect. Same with d. The rule states that a: is correct and d: Am I missing something?

Doesn't a and c contradict each other?????? "NO additional padding" and "must be padded with 1/2 inch thick foam." are opposite theories.

Yes you are missing something.

Besides C being a possible contradiction to A?

Rule says must be padded with a closed-cell, slow recovery foam padding no less than 1/2" thick. That seems to make "c" correct. Rule also says knee and ankle braces which are unaltered from the manufacturer's original design/production do not require any additional padding/covering. That seems to make "a" correct.

I see what you mean about the apparent contradiction, but I would answer a) seeing as the wording is exact.

Quote:
ART. 13 . . . Hard and unyielding items (guards, casts, braces, splints, etc.) must be padded with a closed-cell, slow-recovery foam padding no less than ˝” thick. Knee and ankle braces which are unaltered from the manufacturer’s original design/production do not require any additional padding/covering.

I would suggest the NFHS forum as well, but ...

From an email sent to another official:

"After a great deal of consideration the NFHS Forum as it exists today will end on August 15, 2011. The forum has been a useful online tool for many people over the years. The NFHS has decided to make the forum a member benefit. This means that most forum users will be able to continue to communicate via the new forum.
The new forum is located at http://nfhs.arbitersports.com
We hope that you will find the new NFHS forum to be a very useful item.

Sincerely,
The NFHS Staff"

"Member benefit" means posters have to be members of NFOA, at a cost, I think $25.

Let me ask it this way... a player shows up with an unaltered brace. Are you going to require him to put foam padding on it? No, of course not... so C is not correct.
