Out here in VWT (Very West Texas) we get $40 for varsity and $35 for JV and below. Travel money depends on school location in relation to an agreed upon "bullseye" that is negotiated between our board and the individual school districts. If I am traveling from my west side home to a west side school I can make $16 for driving 2 miles. On the other hand it can be $10 for driving 35 miles.

ASA/NYSSO Blue:
Are the negotiated rates so high because you have trouble recruiting officials or because of great negotiators. I tip my hat to the negotiators. I do not umpire for the money but almost $190 for a varsity doubleheader is nothing to sneeze at if you can find it. |

One thing that I do truly appreciate about the Montana Pay Scale is that I do not mind investing in new apparel and equipment for High School ball because of the pay.
I do not mind buying new stuff in ASA ball either, but here in my local association we make $20 a game fast or slow so it takes a tad longer to pay off those orders. However I only have myself to blame for this one since I am the district ASA UIC for my district here in Montana. |

One thing that is kind of weird is that if you are a varsity official, you might get 12-15 games a year - but if you do JV and modified, and are available, you can do a lot more - this year, which is a pretty typical schedule for me, I have scheduled 30 games - of which 25 will be JV, and 5 or so will be modified! This of course will be whittled down by cancellations for rain, dances, whatever. But I sometimes will get taken off a modified and get reassigned to a JV when an official calls in, or there's a reschedule. We also get if we show up, and the game never starts because of weather or something will get an 'appearance fee' -which is like 25% of our game fee - gas money in other words. Also we have what is called the 'one pitch rule' - meaning if we get the first pitch in, we get the full game fee. As far as ASA is concerned, we get a straight $39 across the board. Our assignor is very tough with the leagues, as he insists on two umpires for ALL games, plus prepayment before he will schedule anything! We also basically get an additional dollar each succeeding season. Our assignor WILL give a break to some tournaments - especially if it is for a good cause ---especially for parents groups trying to raise money for school sports.

Oregon:
Varsity (two umpires): $50.50 for the three largest classifications (6A, 5A, 4A), $45.50 for the smallest (3A/2A). In my area the vast majority of schools are 6A/5A/4A. JV: Same as above for a single umpire (most JV games are solo), or $38.50/$34.25 if it's a crew of two. If there's a rainout the above fees are prorated up through 4 complete innings. You get the full fee if five or more innings are completed. There is also travel pay, calculated from a central point in the city to the site of the game. The minimum travel pay is $5.00. |

Here in N.E Ohio our baseball/softball association gets paid $55.00 per game no mileage regardless of what level frosh/jv/varsity. We have contracts with 13 schools and the furthest drive would be 40 mins or so. Most of us live West of Cleveland so its really not that bad. NSA pays us $30 per game(different assignor) ASA is 27.50(different assignor)

If were in Montana instead of Utah my check tomorrow would be $242.50 for my V/JV double header, but it will be only $151.38...

Central Virginia Softball Fees
In Virginia, each local association negotiates with the various districts for one, two, or three-year 'contracts'. For state playoffs, the VHSL pays $75 for each umpire in the 3-person crew plus $.50/mile for the driver.
For regular seaon in Central Virginia, we get $70/ump for varsity, $60 for JV, and $65 for middle school (all 2-person crews). No travel fee is paid for 'local' schools, but we get $30 or $40 per game travel for schools 30-75 miles away. We offer a 3-person crew to schools for their marquee games for $150, which gives our guys some practice working 3-person before the start of playoffs while keeping the cost to the schools reasonable. FYI, Central Virginia fees will increase by $5/umpire in 2013 across the board.

The only travel guarantee in 1204 is one car round trip mileage at the state comptroller's rater, and the other car a $10.00 rider fee, though they do allow for officials to negotiate two separate cars getting round trip mileage. Of course, next year, this is all going to change. The UIL is going to make officials think they are getting a raise by raising game fees while drastically cutting mileage fees. I have already looked at their proposed adjustment to 1204, and for the majority of schools that I drive to, I will be making about 20% less per game, even with the so-called "raise." Actually, it sounds like you might be using a variant of the upcoming change with your "bullseye" mileage method.

Maryland checking in...........
Average is $65 - $70 for a V game and $55 - $60 for a jv.
My association is 1 1/2 fee for a 1 man game about 50% of jv and a few varsity games. If we show and the clouds open up we get a full fee, whether a pitch is thrown or not....... |

In our part of MD, one-umpire games are not permitted for varsity. We've had umpires work them, but apparently they did not count and had to be replayed.
