ASA 16A National - Sioux Falls, SD

  • 164 teams - ASA says it is the largest tournament they have ever had
  • Started with 45 umpires and it ballooned up to 63 - still not nearly enough, since a number of the locals were only available a few days
  • Most games worked in a day - 7, by a lot of umpires. 6 was common as well
  • 2 rain delays - one washed half of Wednesday and forced us to 1:40 time limit for the duration of the tournament
  • 13 fields used
  • Dream Seam ball sucks
  • 2 contributors to this forum worked the final - Rachel Palmer had 1B on the Championship and the Plate on the IF, I had the plate on the Championship and 3B on the IF. Danny Everson from Utica, NY had 3B on the championship and 1B on the IF
  • 3 nights had games end after 2:00am - several umps had to turn around and work the 8:00am slot
  • IF game ended with the team from the loser's bracket hitting a walkoff 3-run homer.
  • Walt Stack's last tournament as UIC - he is retiring as District 11 UIC and retiring from umpiring. He will be missed by MANY umpires in District 11.

Mark,

Was Willard Schumack (the deaf umpire from Sioux Falls) working this tournament?

I had the pleasure of working with Willard for 3 days. He is such a great guy.

You can post it on another website such as flickr.com or photobucket.com.

PM me if you would like some help with that.

I haven't decided if I should call it from the dugout or the outfield. Apparently, both have really great views!

Screw green, it ain't easy being blue!

I won't be coming here that much anymore. I might check in now and again.

I saw this in my local sports page today because it was a team from my area. Kind of a cool surprise. The story said they won something like 11 in a row after their first loss. Glad you, Rachel and Danny got a couple great games to end the tournament.

Great guy indeed. Worked with him at some deaf slow-pitch regionals and nationals.
