I've got to agree with Steve that the more you use the standard mechanics, the better off you are. Having said that, I've seen the PU call the BU off the play (works best late in the day of a tournament, late in the game) just to save the BU some steps. Not proper mechanics, but two advantages - 1) It does save wear and tear on the shoe leather and 2) The PU has a good angle for a tag play, but as always on a play at third - if the B/R slides toward LF side of base with throw coming from RF, tough to see if swipe tag makes contact.
** Reminder, even if you deviate from standard mechanics, make sure you talk and know who is covering so you don't have a double call.
