OK........
I have spent the better part of the afternoon preparing to travel 300+ miles to umpire in an ASA State tournament...... I have umpired several before and even called in a few National Invitionals.......... BUT.........this is the furthest I have traveled in my umpiring........ As I have posted before.........(maybe NOT on this board)..........I am a bit anal about my gear and what I bring to tournaments I call........... Here is my list that I will be taking with me this weekend: 1-LW Wilson Mask 1-Above Knee All-Star Shin Guards 1-Knee Only All-Star Shin Guards 1-Ump20 Chest Protector 1-Honigs K-2 Chest Protector 6 ASA caps: 2-4 stitch 2-6 stitch 2-8 stitch 6 Powder Blue Shirts: 4-ASA 2-Plain(TASO) 4 Navy Blue Polyester Slacks 2-Plate 2-Field 2-Intera-wear Girdles with cup holder 2-flex belts 3-pair base shoes 1-pair plate shoes 6-pair navy socks 1-large shoe brush 1-small shoe brush 2-bottles black shoe dye/polish 2-extra pair shoe-laces 2-ball bags 3-+pos large indicators 2-+pos wooden plate brushes 1-Honig's plate scraper plate brush 3-bottles Spirits of Ammonia (Thanks to Mike Rowe and SteveM) 1/2 dozen hand towels for wetting 1/2 dozen hand towels for drying This is my summer tournament package....... I hope that you will not think me much of a Dweeb from now on........BUT....... Better safe than sorry.............. Joel |

As long as I drive to the games, I keep just about everything in my van. My van is now essentially a 2-seater as I have removed the middle bench and folded the third one down to help supprt the weight of all the uniforms on the hanging bar. In the back of the van, I have 3 of the
3-drawer sets. I keep my hats in two drawers and I have hats for each or the sanctioning bodies and some plain ones. I have a drawer full of plate/base brushes, counters, lineup card holders, and pens and pencils. I have umpteen different T-shirts - white, red, navy, gray, & black. When you sweat as much as I do, intera-wear doesn't do much better than regular cotton, so most are just plain colored cotton T-shirts. I even keep the cold weather gear in there. I keep 6 ball bags, so I've always got clean ones. I've got lots of extra shoe laces, spandex tights with cup holder... I buy a bag of 3-dozen white shop towels & keep some wet in the cooler to cool off with. I carry a couple chest protectors, a couple sets of leg guards, several masks. I have all the shoe shine stuff Joel listed along with a spray water bottle and an aerosol spray called "Master Shine" that puts a high gloss shine on my base shoes. I have a couple pair of base shoes and a couple pair of plate shoes. I carry rule books & case books for each sanctioning body and a current BRD. I've got blanks for any kind of paperwork I might have to fill out, too. I carry a folding chair and have a cooler that is pretty well stocked with water, tea, fruit juices, ... Since we're empty-nesters now, I don't have to worry about carrying any one other than my wife & me - so the van is set up to have me pretty much fully prepared for any kind of ball game. Steve M |

No, Mick
But Joel missed a belt. The only belts I see on list are the flex belt..That is going to look wried holding up his ball bag...Guess I could send him one of my nail aprons. glen

Belt........who needs a stinking belt.........
Even though not specifically listed........2 Belts and all of my Anti-Inflamitory type drugs were also packed......(along with stomach remedies)........grin
To mick..........we almost needed boats and umbrellas would have been helpful. We had a small shower during opening ceremonies Friday afternoon which made the fields a bit wet but still easily playable......... However.........the weather gods were not going to cooperate fully.........sigh 3rd batter into my first game 8:15 p.m. start time.......I am PU and the skies open up...........about 1-1/2" of rain in an hour........washed out remaining games Friday night........ TD, UIC and DC all get together and with the local PR dept., decide that they can probably get fields playable by early Saturday afternoon....... They cut game times to 60 min. (instead of 90) and reworked the schedule and fields (one 4 field complex was completely unplayable) but were able to get 11 fields going for Saturday 2:00 p.m. start times........(There were 63 teams, so the # of fields available was crucial)... Called from 2:00 .p.m. Saturday until 2:30 a.m. Sunday morning..........got to bed at 3:30 and my internal clock got me up at 5:30 for a whopping 2 hours sleep........ Called two more games Sunday morning..........and the UIC cut loose the umpires who were furthest away........ Got home around around 5......did a bit of laundry (wet uni's/etc)......and don't remember going to sleep on the couch until I woke up around 2:00 a.m. ......... grin Had a good couple of partners and all games I had were uneventful..........IT WAS HOT though...........I am sure I dropped a few pounds.........grin I did not bust out the camera because of the weather threats, so I did not get any pictures..........maybe next time. Gonna finish laundry today and make sure everything is dry before I pack anything back up...........I don't want a mildewy mess before my next tourny......... Joel to glen...........Lauren said she saw you this weekend.......they had not played in 3 weeks, and from what she told me about their games.......it showed.........grin....... Hope you had a good tournament......wished I would have been able to be there.... |

I would have also included insect repellant, sunscreen, and a pain releiving rub. Michael Living on the Tx Gulf Coast.......there is always 2-3 cans of "Deep Woods Off" or "Cutter" or some other such repellent........ I also always have sunscreen (usually for the kids).........However........I am so dark on my exposed areas having spent years in the sun unprotected............. I wonder how the sunscreen can help me now..........I will probably die of skin cancer by the time I am 60 or so.............grin I also bought some "Tiger Balm" before this tournament and it was extremely helpful.........I don't know if "Capsasian" or "Theragesic" would be better because I have never used it...........but the "Tiger Balm" did work wonders.......... Joel We did have critters that I have never come across before at this tournament............on the coast.........we usually only run across skeeters.......(mosquitoes)...... But at this tourney........there were crickets, no-seeums, gnats, June bugs, beetles that I have never seen before, and moths by the millions. Insect repellent did NOT help with those critters...........grin [Edited by Gulf Coast Blue on Jul 9th, 2002 at 08:19 PM] |
