short hand rule

ASA SP team only had 9 players. Can that missing player be the catcher? No kidding a team asked our umpire if the missing player could be the catcher. The umpire told them okay. The pitch would come in, the umpire would rule, the pitcher would run down pick up the ball and return to the pitcher's plate. The ump never threw the ball back (good for him!). I think they only played three innings because of time limits.

I wouldn't have allowed it as per rule 5-4-E and 6-1-D. I'm not their catcher, I'm the umpire. Get a friggin' catcher back there, you morons!

I haven't decided if I should call it from the dugout or the outfield. Apparently, both have really great views!

Screw green, it ain't easy being blue!

I won't be coming here that much anymore. I might check in now and again.

Cannot happen. You cannot have a pitch without a catcher in the catcher's box. Should have just called a ball every 10 seconds.

Then again, he wasn't too smart to begin.

Correct. There MUST be a catcher in the box. The missing fielder would have to be one of the infielders other than the pitcher and catcher, or an outfielder. Most times they will just use 3 in the outfield, although I've seen some teams go with 3 in the infield. Even saw one team go with three infielders, and 3 outfielders and one person roaming around depending on the batter. But a catcher is a MUST! BTW, if this were coed wreck, make sure it's the blond bombshell with the nice rack!
