I had a call in a 14U tournament just last week where the catcher blocked plate beautifully as she took the throw from the shortstop, tagged the runner, clearly, as the runner slid into her and then lost control of the ball. I asked her to "show me the ball" since I couldn't find it, and she came up with an empty glove. Much to the chagrin of the defensive bench and fans, I had no option but to call the runner safe.

The difference here is that the runner slid which permits the contact and the possibility of jarring the ball loose. That is not an option if the runner comes in standing up.
