Anybody see the Nebraska-FSU game last night and catch this play?
Runner on 1B (can't remember which team), batter hits ground ball up the middle. F6 moves toward 2B, goes to the ground, tries to field the ball, thinks she has it in her glove, and slaps the glove on the bag while the ball lies under her. Then, realizing that the ball is somewhere other than in her glove, she reaches down, with her glove still in contact with 2B, and picks up the ball with her bare hand, well before the runner arrives. Then she tags 2B with the ball—after the runner slides in. Ump makes the out call. The two announcers quickly determine that the ump has blown the call. One of them even explains to the viewing audience, "She has to tag the base with the hand that's holding the ball!" The announcers go on to bemoan the wonderful opportunity the batting team just lost because of the rotten call, and surmise that the coach will have something powerful to say to the ump after the inning. Did the announcers wonder even a little why nobody argued at all?

These same announcers have never questioned why there are no radio/tv's in the dugouts - gee, maybe because the players want to pay attention to the game that is being played on the field; and, not the fantasy game that the announcers are talking about.....

Saw it, and thought to myself what idiots the announcers were. The ump made the right call. What really amazed me was that was the person who made the comment about the player having to tag the base with the ball was one of our former Olympic ball players, Michelle Smith.
On a brighter note, did you see Bobby Cox's daughter in that game? She pinch ran. (I was surprised when they announced her as his daughter, instead of granddaughter.) Scott |

I've said this before, and will repeat until my last breath - the ONLY announcer I ever heard who knows the rules of the sport he announces is Chick Hearn of the L. A. Lakers. That's because he once was a referee.
