I have no problem with your diplomatic solution.
An argument could also be made that you didn't see the runner "not" score either. If you looked, even late, and the runner was beyond the plate......? This is the type of thing where 10.3 comes into play, it can become a bit dicey. BTW, you were both working too many games. This is where tournament hosts save money by using fewer umpires, but it often results in providing the teams with substandard officiating.
