Saw this on another board..........wondered about your thoughts...........

I know what mine are........but they may be incorrect.....

In a game between 7-8 year olds this happens.

With a runner on 1st base and nobody out, a ground ball is hit to the 2nd baseman. Runner from 1st starts towards 2nd base, but runs back toward 1st when the 2nd baseman starts chasing him with the ball, and he gets in rundown between 1st and 2nd. The batter touches 1st base, but he runs back toward home plate when he sees his teammate returning to 1st base.

The first baseman is standing on 1st base when he receives the throw from the 2nd baseman and he tags the runner who started at 1st, but after the runer safely got back to 1st. He then gets the batter in a rundown toward home, but the throw to the catcher is dropped, and the batter reaches 1st base. In the meantime, the runner from 1st base has now gone to 2nd base.

Who is out? Anybody?

Joel

"The first baseman is standing on 1st base when he receives the throw from the 2nd baseman and he tags the runner who started at 1st, but after the runer safely got back to 1st."

Looks as if this was the defining moment. At that point, the batter was put out, which removed the force on the runner who started at first. Therefore, since the tag on that runner came after he got back to 1B, he is safe. Any play after that simply results in what it results in: a runner on 2B. If F3 had been sharp, he would have tagged the runner and then stepped on first to put them both out.

Keep in mind that though the batter had touched 1B, when he retreated toward home, the force on him was reinstated.

Cool Just my thoughts

Ok here is what I would call B/R out for running back towards home which I believe is considered a interference call so "Dead Ball" and leave R1 on 1st

I believe this is the correct call at any age on this play and probably would call it the same way even for 7-8yr olds

Oops! In bouncing back and forth between baseball and softball, and with the references to "he," I forgot we were dealing with softball in this play.

In Fed and ASA, if the batter-runner steps back toward home plate to avoid or delay a tag, the B-R is out and runners return. The question, then, is whether the B-R was trying to avoid or delay a TAG. Since the play was between 2B and 1B, maybe not. Was any fielder actively trying to tag the B-R?

Call sound like the right one but, Who has umpires with 7-8 yr. olds? Why? Are there standings?

Cool

Okay you are right when B/R 1st retreated he was not delaying or avoiding a tag. So actually I guess you have B/R out when F4 throws to F3 on the bag at 1st which removes the force on R1. So R1 is safe on the tag at 1st and at this time the BU should of made the "OUT" call and signal on the B/R letting F3 and R1 know of the situation and at this age (7 & 8 yrs) I would probably call time to kill the play. Older groups I guess B/R continue running after the BU proper call to avoid the tag would be a case for interference and R1 would also be out BUT a situation that is probably avoided with the proper call by the BU

Just some thoughts

I'm not sure if the "force" on the BR is reinstated if he retreats. Let's do it each way.

Force reinstated.

BR out the moment F3 receives the ball while in contact with 1B. R1 safe at 1B. TIME!!!!

Force not reinstated.

R1 out on the tag. TIME!!!!

I cannot find any other options in this play. Oh, and why am I calling time? Because you are dealing with 7-8 year olds.

for Rachel

You are right it would be nice at that age if the kids could just learn to play and have fun with only good adult supervision. The parents need coaches and umpires at that age to have someone to show the kids how to act like obnoxious jerks towards!Just heard a story on the radio where a parent at T ball assaulted the coach because some of the parents felt the team wasn't playing well enough!

That was the reason I posted this Mike.......would the force be reinstated if the BR retreats?

I have it the same as you.....but I wouldn't call time.

I see no reason that the force would not be reinstated. When I get the energy, I'll search through the book again.
