Umpire Coordinator

I'm gonna be an umpire coordinator for an ASA national.

Anyone got a "how to" primer they can share?

Say goodbye to your family. You will not be seeing much of them until after the tournament.

Yeah I already knew that... I'm looking more for something that lists the things I need to do - letters, calls, emails, stuff like that.

You should introduce yourself to the UIC. He is the one you will need to satisfy.

Contact your host/TD as these will be the people you will be working with the closest beside the umpires. Try to make as many informal contacts in the hotel(s) in which the umpires will be staying. Get to know the surrounding areas if you do not already.

Little things help like knowing where local laudromats, special transportation away from the tournament (if needed), a place for the umpires to catch a late night snack, etc. can be found.

Find out about an "umpire social" or whatever you want to call it. Some TDs and hosts are oblivious to things such as this and some are more than eager to take care of the umpires. Find out if the TD or host organization is preparing anything. If not, put the bug in their ear now and let your UIC know what is going on. His "inquiry" into the issue may carry a little more weight.

I'm sure there are a lot of other things with which I am not familiar, but others will probably add.

Good luck.

Make sure with the TD about the umpire room/area.
Stock it with lots of food. Lots of food.
Put on your running shoes.
Buy a backpack so you can carry more water to the umps on the field.
Practice drinking adult beverages and listening to war stories.
Last but not least, practice going without much sleep if you have a big tournament, less if it is a SP one because the players will be keeping everyone up at the hotel.
