1 man coverage of a bunt

Single umpire mechanics. (The dominant situation here, even in most tournaments.)

How do you guys that do single umpire get into position for the play at 1B with a bunt into the infield on the 1B side? (Not right down the 1B line, and not right back at F1, but in between.) With good teams, the runner will be blocking your view down the running lane, the charging F3 will be blocking your view on the inside of the foul line, F2 will be charging toward the ball as well as F1, pretty much blocking you out completely unless you can get well into the infield, and F5 will be in the mix there, too.

Add a runner on 3rd, keeping you sort of home, and you have no shot at seeing the play at 1B.

Any bright ideas?

Make the call from far 1B foul side. With everyone crashing you gotta get out side.

What are you doing thats one man right now?

I do lots during rec season but thats over around here.

Dont even think about going inside, you'll get crashed for sure. Stay outside, move down the line, do the best you can.

Refer all complaints to the guy who won't pay for two umpires.

With no one on, if the batter is LH, I will stay on the foul side of the 1B foul line. It might not be correct, but I can see almost everything in front of me. If the BR advances past 1B, I will be busting butt to get to second.

If I have runners on, or the batter is RH, I will exit to the left and go up the 3B foul line as far as I need to in order to see around all the bodies in front of the circle. This will also get me closer to a second play at 2B or 3B.

If it is a squeeze, I am pretty much staying in the holding zone so I can get back to make the call at the plate.

Almost everything in MN is one umpire, unless it is a tournament AND it is Sunday, or the tournament has charged extra for two umpire games for the 16U's and 18U's (VERY RARE!). We will almost never have 2 umps on a game below 16U.

EVERY league game is one umpire.

The Women's 23U league we assign is one umpire. Very low key, but we need a second umpire on those games.

I don't think it is that big a deal. Through the RHB and head for the circle. Set depending upon how deep the ball got into the infield.

Sure you do. Sometimes stepping away from a play gives you a better perspective even though it is not the distance you want.

Any bright ideas?

I am really surprised.

The ONLY time I work 2 man is during rec ball season or when short handed.

I've worked quite a bit of 3 man this year as well.
