Pitching

Can a pitching step back with 1 foot off the pitcher plate and then pitch the ball?

In High School yes,
ASA no,

Course it still depends on which foot!

Ditto on what Dakota says reference Federation rules. Once hands are together you can't step backwards.

And you know, it seems like midway into the season I encounter that with a pitcher who has gotten away with it all season. Then I get called anal for enforcing the rule.

Also, since no rule set was cited in the OP, you cannot step back in NCAA either.

i believe you can step backwards off the rubber even when the hands have come together. but that is not what you were all talking about.

Ronald,
Not so for the major softball sanctioning bodies.
I'd suggest you check your rule book.
In Fed - the only one which allows a backward step, the step must be before the hands come together.

I think ronald was probably referring to backing off the plate completely to start over.
