Actually, not all states allow a citizen's arrest. North Carolina, unfortunately, is one of those states where it's not allowed by law.
Authorized deadly force (also known as justified self-defense) is also something that varies from state to state. In NC, there are 4 requirements for the use of deadly force, but since this is a softball forum, I'll not go into that unless asked. Though I will say that if a knife had been used on one of the players during the attack, deadly force (use of a baseball bat) would be authorized in NC if the assaulted individual had no retreat. F'ed up situation, though. Sorry your ump had to endure that, greymule. I hope he's okay and not too shaken up over it. Statement of the obvious: methinks this is good justification for a "game postponed due to uncontrollable circumstances."

Dave I haven't decided if I should call it from the dugout or the outfield. Apparently, both have really great views! Screw green, it ain't easy being blue! I won't be coming here that much anymore. I might check in now and again.
