When I read stories like this, demonstrating a value system for high school athletics that seems so out of whack, there is one consolation I can take.

This sort of behavior is a tiny fraction of what high school sports are all about. It is the small exception, not the rule.

The NFHS reports that over seven million high school students participated in all of their combined programs. For boys basketball, there were over one-half million participants.

Sure, I hope that situations like this one can be straightened out, with an emphasis on sportsmanship, fair play and following the rules. For the vast majority of high school athletes those are the values that will guide their high school experience.
