The status of a bounding ball which is touched by a player or object foreign to the ground prior to touching or passing first or third base is determined by the location of the ball at the time of contact. IOW, if the ball was over foul ground at the time the catcher first touched the ball, it is foul. Apparently, some of your fellow umpires need a clinic. |
I remember a game this summer when a batted ball hit the plate and bounced straight up (okay, it was moving slightly towards the pitcher), the catcher sprang straight forward, gloved the ball and easily threw out the runner at first (beautiful play, HTBH). Then:
PU: "Foul Ball". Coach: "Foul? Why?" PU: "Ball struck the plate." I had to bite my toungue in half. Especially since the coach nodded sagely and turned around in full acceptance of the answer. |
