Guys....I guess I've been away too long. I should have stated this in the beginning.

The way I was taught was to not call time for plays until I was sure the runners were no longer advancing; therefore if there is only the BR I can wait just a few seconds longer to see if a play develops as a part of my mechanics.

On all plays at 1B where the BR is safe , I make my safe call, then wait about 5 seconds while now backing toward the plate to see if anything develops. Usually within 5 seconds of the BR passing 1B, someone is going to say something to F3 that the BR missed the base or the runner will know that the base was missed and will hustle back to the bag. If not then call Time and since you've been backing toward the plate anyway you should be only adding 3-4 seconds and only to those plays.

If you always wait this time on 'Safe' calls then you won't be tipping the defense.
