Question Play

We have a runner (#16) on third with 2 out. The batter is #24 followed by #25. #24 hits foul pop up and the third baseman is interfered with by #16 and is called for interference. Who leads off the following inning?? # 24 or #25.

Off the top of my head, I have to say #24 leads off. Her at-bat was never completed because #16 was called out for interference prior to the catch (if there was one).

Speaking NFHS - #24. #16 is out for interference, charge foul ball (and strike) to #24.

I don't have my ASA rule book in front of me but I believe when the runner interferes with a routine fly foul ball, the runner who interfered is out AND the batter is out also. Since there were two outs in the original post, I'm not sure if you would call them both out, but think you would. If that is the case, #25 would lead off the next inning. Dave

No, it wasn't a foul pop-up. It was a fly ball which may have been over foul territory

I stand corrected. I should have known better...

Originially, my thinking was it was a completed turn at bat. However, I think now that
probably the interference negated a completed turn at bat.

Is that correct. Bring 24 back to plate?

I don't see how it is any different than say a runner on first and a hit to the second baseman. The runner on first interferes with the second baseman. Dead ball, runner coming from first out on interference and with less than 2 outs, BR is put on first. If two outs you don't put them on first but that BR is not the lead off batter next inning, their turn at bat is done. Dave

The difference is that the ball in over foul territory when the play is killed. Therefore it becomes a foul ball, strike on the batter. Batter did not finish her time at bat, as she did in your example when a fair ball was hit.

That's the ruling for NFHS, but I don't think so for ASA. Dave

8-7 THE RUNNER IS OUT. 8-7-L NOTE: Section 7 J-L: When the runners are called out for interference, the batter-runner is awarded first base and credited with a fielders choice. EXCEPTION: If the interference prevents the fielder from catching a routine fly ball (fair or foul) with ordinary effort, the batter is also out.

Yeah, I'm there. The batter completed the at-bat, regardless who is actually called out as the third or fourth out. I've got #25 coming up.
