Remember
I disagree.
If an errant throw takes the fielder into the path of the runner, you have a train wreck, but not obstruction by the defense nor interference by the offense. Possession by the fielder at the time of the wreck is an out. No possesion by the fielder at the same time is not an out. The runner attempting to get out of the way of the train wreck is not an empediment manifested by the fielder, but an attempt to get around the wreck. Let them play. |

For the record, Booker, you're just wrong on this one. Even on an errant throw, if a fielder without possession of the ball causes a runner to alter their path (either by contact or by causing them to run around them), it is textbook OBS. Your interp is an old one, and one that the powers that be do not want any longer.

Some coaches are under the impression this is not obstruction. Last fall I called it on a play much like this. Last words of the coach were, "Well, that is a bull$hit call and You are a bull$hit umpire." While that opinion may be debatable, we weren't having that debate on that afternoon on that diamond. If the fielder does not possess the ball fully, completely possess it it's obstruction.

25 degrees celcius here in CHCh New Zealand
Had a mens Premier double header last night based the first plated the second , a cool 18 degrees . Two tie breakers started at 6-30pm and finished just on midnight . 2 ejections for being called some thing about chewing on mens appendages . A very irritable game first up with an umpire who knew little about game control nor where the strike zone was . I managed to keep things in check until the bottom of the 8th when all hell broke loose . 2nd game very fast and furious but good softball |
