Sure... nothing says you can't trap a ball to gain possession. What it says is that a trap is not a catch. But a fielder is not required to "catch" (i.e. catch being defined as obtaining possession of the ball prior to it touching the ground) the ball to make an out on a force-play. He's required to gain possession of the ball (which could easily occur after a trap, if he had enough control of the ball to then lift it and "show me the ball" without bobbling it or dropping it.
