NFHS game.
Situation: Bases loaded, 2 outs, batter swings, misses 3rd strike, catcher drops ball, runners including batter are all running, defense is leaving the field, catcher retrives the ball, rolls it towards the pitchers circle, 4 runs score. Coach and fans went crazy, umpires stand by ruling. [why not] Now coach wants a written rule interpretation of the ruling. His team did go back onto the field and finish the inning and eventually won the game.

Dera Coach,
Please read NFHS Softball Rule 7-4.g, and the Effect listed. This covers what occurred in your game, as the catcher did not catch the third strike with two outs, and left the field without retiring the batter. Since all offensive players continued to run, the play was ruled correctly by the umpires based on that rule. We are certainly sorry neither you nor your players apparently knew this rule. You may find it beneficial to your team to learn and teach them all of the game rules which may apply. Sincerely, ........ |

Thanks Steve.

You might even quote the rule (and effect) for him in the letter.
I would have a hard time saying "Dear Coach" at the beginning, and not "Dear Dumb@$$"... but then again, I tend to be politically incorrect when dealing with, um, brain-challenged people. |

The best response to a coach who doesn't want to see an umpire is to let him have him(her) over and over again.
I also love it when a coach asks for the assigners number and I get to give him mine. It is amazing to hear the things I have done when I was on a field. If I had known I was that bad an umpire I would have stpped assigning myself to anything above coach pitch a long time ago. |

I agree, outathm. It's sometimes funny to hear the coaches call me at home, not knowing I was on or at the field, sometimes even that I was the umpire they are complaining about... and then hear them relive the details of the event in a completely unique and untrue fashion. Makes me take with a large grain of salt any calls I get on games when I'm not there.
