TASO is the ruling body for Texas NFHS Play. This is
their desired procedures for handling Banned bats. 1. If a bat does not have a certification seal on it but it appears on the ASA Approvd Bat list and the coach can show you the number on the approved listing, then the bat can be used. 2. The UIL desires that all umpires have a copy of the "Approved" Bat list in their possession. This copy can be in the umpire's equipment bag or vehicle. The only list to be carried on the field is the "Banned" bat list. The "Approved" listing would be available if, for some reason, you needed to refer to it. This was in effect last year, but due to the length and time required to print the list most umpires did not have it. How do other NFHS groups handled this?

JEL or other Georgia Umpires,
If I understand correctly in Georgia teams are to post the banned bat list in the dugout of both teams using the list pulled on Monday of each week. Most teams have a banned list but not always the current week.

Bagman,
It is really the "approved" list which is to be posted, as well as the banned. I carry the banned list. Any bats without the 2004 seal (and not on the banned list) must be shown by the coaches to be on the approved list. What I have been doing after checking for the banned, or damaged/altered bats is to ask the coach to show me his approved list. If he has that, I will make sure one, or two of the bats without the 2004 seal on them are on the approved list. If that checks out we play ball. Most of the coaches have all the team bats, and individual bat highlighted on the list. I had one team place 23 bats out for inspection once! I would like to see an easier way to do this, maybe require the AD to certify the stuff, or just go to wood bats! It really hasn't been much confusion yet, but playoffs begin next week. If confusion comes, it will come there! |

JEL
What region are you working we got 2 AAAAA? Not much work, only 7 games so we are sending 3 man crew and pooling game and travel money the splitting it 3 ways to get more umpires more exposure. Another umpire adn myself dropped out to give "younger" in time not age an opportunity for State exposure.

We drew region 6 A. We have 2 crews set for what appears to be Bowdon v. Bremen, and Trion v. Gordon-Lee (Chickamauga). These will be monday, then 1 more game thursday, I'm guessing at Chickamauga. That's about a 3 hr trip from home, but a pretty drive!
UIC, myself, the mrs, and one other will be doing sectionals at Lovejoy two weeks from today. Believe also 6A. |
