Here is one way to deal with difficult coaches.
Coach questions call, shot to death on field by referee JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) -- A South African soccer referee pulled a gun and shot dead a coach who questioned one of his rulings, police said on Sunday. Inspector Mali Govender of the Grahamstown police in the Eastern Cape province said a fight broke out after the referee gave a yellow warning card to a player in a local match on Saturday. "There was an altercation...and the referee became threatened when the other team approached him because they were angry," Govender said. "So he pulled out a gun and killed the coach of the visiting team." Govender said the coach died on the field while the referee fled the scene. Police were confident of making an arrest soon, she added. WMB |

It's a "black eye" for a country and for degenerating attitudes in general, not just sports and certainly not just one sport. I also find it hard to belive that anyone would even sarcastically say "Here is one way to deal with difficult coaches". [Edited by CecilOne on Jul 27th, 2004 at 04:10 PM]

Certainly not for sports in general, however soccer (futbol)seems to attract a disproportionate share of violence as compared to other "contact" sports. There is something wrong when a professional sport has riot police in regular atttendance in South America and in some European countries. Jim |

What about the police required at HS basketball and football games? My point is that the same person acting as a soccer official in this example probably would have done the same thing in another sport. Given the country it occurred in, there are a lot of tensions and fears we don't understand. But I'm glad you agree that it's a "black eye" for all of us, not just sports and certainly not just one sport.
